The Alameda County Coroner’s office identified three people who died after a teenage driver allegedly plowed into a group outside a convenience store in East Oakland on Saturday evening, injuring several others.
The men, two Oakland residents and one from Sacramento, were identified as Miguel Angel Sanchez Ramirez, 44; Charles Ray Blackmon, 65; and Robert Dixon, 64, according to officials. Authorities said the 17-year-old driver, who was arrested after the crash, was driving recklessly at over 50 mph before he struck parked vehicles, went onto the sidewalk, and rammed into those standing on the sidewalk.
The three men died at the scene, authorities said. Five others — including the alleged driver, who is believed to have been the sole occupant — were injured in the crash by East Bay Market Liquor at the intersection of 85th Avenue and International Boulevard around 11:15 p.m. on May 16.
After the crash, Bay Area rapper Mistah F.A.B mourned the loss of Dixon, a man he described as a lifelong friend nicknamed “Uncle Frog.”
Dixon was known as a neighborhood legend on the block where he died, a witness interviewed by ABC7 news. Dixon was part of “Frog and Frog,” a YouTube podcast out of Oakland that highlighted local figures such as V-White of the Delinquents and Mistah F.A.B. himself.
Thizzler on the Roof, an Oakland-based media platform that highlights West Coast hip-hop and rap, described Dixon in an Instagram tribute as a renown Oakland personality whose “name and presence touched generations on the block.”
The teen could face charges of felony hit-and-run and felony vehicular manslaughter. Alameda County District Attorney’s officials did not immediately confirm whether charges had been filed against the driver, who was not identified by authorities due to his age.
On Monday, Oakland Police Chief James Beere said the driver tried to flee the scene after the crash, but was restrained by bystanders before being arrested by police. Investigators plan to analyze blood and toxicology reports to see whether or not the teen had alcohol or drugs in his system.
Police said the vehicle had not been reported stolen. So far, the crash is believed to have occurred as a result of driver error, but authorities are not ruling out the possibility that the act was intentional.
