A 47-year-old East Boston man was rescued off Long Beach in Nahant on Wednesday afternoon after he became too exhausted to ride his kite board back to shore , officials said.
Nahant police and fire were alerted to a kiteboarder in distress around 12:27 p.m., when his 11-year-old son asked a bystander to call 911 to report that his father seemed to be struggling, Nahant officials said in a statement.
The man appeared unable to climb back onto his board, his son said.
Swampscott police and fire, Massachusetts State Police, and the state Department of Conservation and Recreation staff quickly assembled and launched a rescue mission, officials said.
Swampscott fire launched its rescue watercraft and reached the man first, using a lifeline to pull him to the boat, officials said. Nahant fire retrieved the kiteboarder from the boat and brought him back to shore, officials said.
Officials applauded his son for getting help quickly and remaining calm.
“[The kiteboarder] had no injuries,” said Nahant Fire Chief Austin Antrim in a statement. “He was just exhausted after the ordeal and would not have been able to get back to shore on his own.”
“His son really did a great job, staying calm and calling for help,” he added.
The man was removed from the water about 14 minutes after the 911 call, officials said.
He was treated at the scene and declined medical transport, officials said.
“When we cooperate along our coastline, we save lives,” said Nahant Police Chief Timothy Furlong. “Our agencies can accomplish anything if we work together. We’re all so glad this rescue had a happy ending.”
