El Paso police said a 77-year-old man shot a two-year-old pit bull mix Monday after the dog became involved in a fight with the man’s Chihuahua.
A police spokesperson said the two dogs were behaving semi-aggressively toward each other before the shooting. Authorities said the man left the park to retrieve a gun and later returned.
The pit bull’s owner told KFOX the other man warned him to get his dog as the animals snarled at one another. The owner said he was unable to reach his dog before the man opened fire.
“His little dog and mine looked like they were going to start getting in a fight and he immediately just pulled out a gun and shot my dog claiming, you know, ‘oh I was just defending my dog,’” the owner told KFOX. “Who defends their dog with a gun? Who brings a gun to a dog park?”
