Richmond police said a death initially investigated as suspicious is now believed to have been the result of a solo-vehicle crash after investigators found video that appeared to show a vehicle entering the water near Canal Boulevard early Saturday.

The Richmond Police Department said investigators reviewed footage from the department’s camera system and located video showing what appeared to be a vehicle entering the water near Canal Boulevard at approximately 1 a.m. Saturday.

Using sonar equipment and other marine resources, responding agencies located a submerged vehicle, police said.

Dive teams helped recover the vehicle and confirmed that no additional occupants were inside, according to Richmond police.

“At this time, the investigation indicates this was a solo-vehicle fatal collision, and there is no evidence of foul play,” the department said in its update.

Police did not immediately release the driver’s name or provide additional details about how the vehicle entered the water.
