WOOD VILLAGE, Ore. (KATU) — A judge has ordered a 14-year-old boy accused of shooting a 13-year-old girl in Wood Village to remain in detention.

On Wednesday, families of both the suspect and victim were present at the juvenile detention center in Northeast Portland.

Because both the suspect and victim are minors, KATU will not naming them. The teen is facing charges of attempted murder, assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

The judge was ordered to remain in custody while the girl continues to recover from multiple surgeries. According to her family, she will remain in the hospital for another week.

While the 13-year-old herself didn’t appear in court, the victim’s mother submitted a statement to the judge asking that the teen remain detained. She also noted her daughter was shot near her heart.

Several members of the victim’s family attended the hearing, including the girl’s sister-in-law, who also asked the judge to deny the teen release.

“She was in surgery fighting for her life,” the woman said. “She had another surgery today. He doesn’t deserve to be free on the streets because he’s a threat to the community.”

The teen’s attorney argued he turned himself in and has medical needs that should be considered by the court.

“I will make sure to take care of him, and that he’s not on the streets, and goes to school,” the boy’s father said. “I wanted to apologize for what happened.”

The judge ultimately ruled the teen will remain in detention. His next hearing is scheduled for June 3.
