Residents, designers, construction professionals and businesses can learn more about making home improvements in Long Beach during an upcoming expo.

In its second year, the city will host its Home Improvement Expo from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 30, at Whaley Park, 5620 E. Atherton St. Resources will be available for those looking to remodel or expand their homes, add an accessory dwelling unit, install solar panels, convert to a low-water garden or pursue other improvements.

The second annual, free event will take place during National Home Improvement Month and led by the Long Beach Community Development Department, according to the press release.

“Long Beach is a city of progress and a place that is continually reinventing itself,” Mayor Rex Richardson said in a statement. “This expo will give residents from every part of our city new inspiration and free advice for how to make their homes more beautiful, sustainable and comfortable.”

Dozens of local professionals at the expo will share practical tips and answer questions on design, construction, flooring, tile, cabinetry and shelving, smart-home tools, heating and cooling systems, windows, and more, the press release said.

Community Development staff, including specialists from the Building and Safety, Planning and Code Enforcement bureaus, will be joined by other city departments to answer questions about property upgrades and neighborhood improvements, such as street trees, the press release said. The expo will also feature giveaways and family-friendly activities, such as a worm bin and a seed-planting project for children, as well as a fire truck for all to hop into the front seat.

“A big part of our mission is to enhance quality of life in our city and help residents build homes and neighborhoods that bring a lifetime of happiness,” Christopher Koontz, director of the Community Development Department, said in a statement. “The Home Improvement Expo connects residents to Long Beach-based experts who help to make that happen.”
