MOORPARK — The Long Beach Wilson track and field team set a new CIF state record by running 3:33.83 in the girls 4×400 relay at the CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet at Moorpark High School on Saturday.

The Bruins quartet of senior Brooke Blue, sophomore Brooklyn Fowler, junior Clara Adams and junior Saniah Varnando, won the race going away by nearly eight seconds.

“It felt great and a little surreal,” Wilson coach Shannon Fisher said after the race. “I told them that I wanted them to end the day right and not just run to qualify for state. I wanted them to run something great now so that the pressure to run at state would not be too demanding.  But that was crazy and it’s still a little hard to believe.”

Adams won the girls 400 in 51.98, which set a new CIF-SS record and qualified her as a top contender to win the state title in her signature event at the CIF State Track and Field Championship at Buchanan High in Clovis on May 29 and 30.

Wilson finished 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th, respectively, in the 400. Adams, Varnado, Fowler, and Blue all individually qualified for the Bruins, who are looking to win the program’s fourth straight state title.

“Their confidence is pretty high going into the state championships after running that (4×4) time,” Fisher continued. “With a couple of them having run multiple races prior to the 4×400, it’s pretty amazing they could turn around and run such a fast time, so I would say that it is definitely a confidence booster.”

In other girls races, St. Pius X-St. Matthias’ Dylan Nelson qualified in the 100.

Adams qualified in the 200.

Wilson’s Shirayah Lewis-Williams, Long Beach Poly’s Laila Kirk and Wilson’s Riley Jones qualified in the 800.

Long Beach Poly’s Kadence Bain and Varnado qualified in the 100 hurdles. Varnado qualified in the 300 hurdles.

Long Beach Wilson and Long Beach Poly both qualified in the 4×100 and 4×400 relays. Wilson also qualified in the 4×800 relay.

Wilson’s Journii Spencer qualified in the triple jump.

Los Alamitos’ Cassidy Nguyen qualified in the pole vault.

On the boys side, Mayfair’s Justin Hayes qualified in the 200.

Long Beah Poly’s Noah Smith qualified in the 400.

Wilson’s Jordan Kincherlow qualified in the 800.

Long Beach Poly’s Lynnox Newton and Armon Bly both qualified in the 110 hurdles.

Long Beach Poly’s 4×400 relay qualified. Wilson’s 4×400 relay was disqualified.

Los Alamitos’ Zion Chambers qualified in the high jump.

Long Beach Poly’s Jephte Tchami and Warren’s Kymani Hollis qualified in the shot put.
