Re “City OKs fee cuts on trash to settle lawsuit” (May 21): The settlement is a farce. It just encourages unscrupulous politicians to misrepresent, lie and overreach again, because in the worst case, it reverts to status quo and any other outcome puts them ahead.

Cheating pays off. That’s why the county is using the city’s successful strategy of deceptive ballot language (now on term limits). At all levels of government, we’re watching politicians enrich and empower themselves with impunity at the expense of oblivious voters.

Democracy dies in darkness.

The settlement was a sellout for single-family homeowners. We had a great case. Why do we have to wait until July 2027 for the monthly trash-collection fees to be lowered? What is the city doing with our overpayments until then? Will we get a refund with interest? Totally disappointed, to say the least.
