An unconscious man discovered lying face down in the sand on Black’s Beach on Friday evening later died at a hospital, officials said.

Police, lifeguards and paramedics responded around 8 p.m. to reports of a possible drowning at the beach below Torrey Pines Gliderport off Torrey Pines Scenic Drive after a person walking on the beach discovered the man, San Diego police said.

The bystander administered CPR until emergency responders arrived by land and boat.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene about 40 minutes later at Scripps Memorial Hospital, police said.

Authorities have not yet identified the person. California State Parks was handling the investigation, police said.
