Some big bounces went the way of the Detroit Red Wings as they beat the Los Angeles Kings 4-3 in a shootout to open up their four-game West Coast road trip on Thursday.

Those things tend to have a way of evening out over the course of the season, but the Red Wings probably weren’t expecting that the law of averages would be catching up with them 24 hours later.

In a 5-2 Halloween night loss to the Anaheim Ducks, bad bounces haunted Detroit throughout the game.

Detroit had a second-period goal disallowed on a video review when it was ruled that Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider had scored by using a direct kicking motion to put the puck in the Anaheim net. Later, in the third period, a power-play goal by Ducks forward Chris Kreider counted even though the Detroit net was off its moorings. Officials ruled that Red Wings goalie John Gibson had deliberately knocked the net off.

Just 24 hours earlier, the Red Wings were the beneficiaries of a video review. Kevin Fiala thought he’d netted the overtime winner for LA. Resigned to defeat, Detroit players went to their dressing room. Some players were even in the midst of doffing their gear when word came that a video review determined that Fiala had interfered with Red Wings goalie Cam Talbot, and the goal was disallowed.

Unhappy Homecoming For Red Wings Gibson

Gibson spent 12 seasons tending goal for the Ducks before the summer trade that sent him to Detroit. On his first visit back to his old haunt, the outcome was scary.

Gibson made 27 saves, but absorbed a defeat that brought a halt to the club’s three-game winning streak. He acknowledged the ovation from the crowd following a video tribute during the first period.

The Red Wings fell to 0-2 in the second game of back-to-backs.

Anaheim’s Kids Outplay Detroit’s Youngsters

Both teams are loaded with talented young prospects, and on this night, it was Anaheim’s kids who were carrying the day. Center Leo Carlsson accounted for four points. Mason McTavish and Cutter Gauthier both scored goals.

One positive note for the Red Wings was that Alex DeBrincat scored for the fourth consecutive game.
