CHICO, Calif. – Rescuers searched the Sacramento River in Butte County early Monday morning after a report of a person going missing in the water. The incident command was established in the Missouri Bend area, west of Cana. The initial report mentioned two people missing, but authorities later clarified with Action News Now that there was only one person missing.
According to CAL FIRE scanner reports, the call came in around 2 a.m. on Monday. Search-and-rescue teams responded to the scene to locate the missing individual. Around 4:30 a.m., scanner traffic indicated that searchers reported they had located the missing person. The person was found alive.
On Sunday, there was a paddling event on the Sacramento River called the “California River Quest.” Paddlers chose different distances, with the longest route going 100 miles from Redding to near Chico.
It’s not clear if this has any connection to that event. Authorities have not confirmed whether the missing person was a participant in the paddling event.
There is an alcohol ban on part of the Sacramento River for Memorial Day weekend. It’s for a 6-mile stretch of the river, between the Irvine Finch Boat Ramp south to the mouth of Big Chico Creek.
