DH Kyle Schwarber leads the majors with 20 homers and has nine in May (.899 OPS). 1B Bryce Harper has hit six of his 12 homers this month (.950 OPS), while SS Trea Turner has struggled in May (.495 OPS). LHP Jose Alvarado (6.11 ERA) leads Phillies relievers in appearances this year with 23, followed by 22 from both RHP Brad Keller (3.74 ERA) and LHP Tim Mayza (3.91 ERA).
San Diego: 1B Gavin Sheets has hit five of his nine homers in a blistering May (.953 OPS), while DH Miguel Andujar (.756 OPS in May) and 3B Manny Machado both have four homers this month. Machado’s .469 OPS is the worst among Padres regulars in May, while Fernando Tatis Jr. (.615) is the only regular other than Sheets with an OPS above .600 this month. Four relievers have not allowed an earned run this month — RHP Jason Adam (9⅔ IP), RHP Mason Miller (8⅓ IP), LHP Wandy Peralta (11 IP) and LHP Yuki Matsui (10 IP).

Phillies LHP Jesus Luzardo (3-4, 4.85 ERA) | He won 15 games while finishing seventh in NL Cy Young voting last year (3.92 ERA). Luzardo has quality starts in five of his last six starts (2.73 ERA). He has a 4.50 ERA in five career starts against the Padres, the last in 2024 (6 IP, 3 ER).
Padres RHP Griffin Canning (0-2, 9.00 ERA) | The Padres have lost each of his last three starts (12.27 ERA), although he struck out five against one while over five innings of three-run ball his last time out. He won both starts against the Phillies last year (3.60 ERA) while in the Mets rotation but has a 4.80 ERA in 15 innings against Philadelphia.

Phillies RHP Aaron Nola (2-4, 6.04 ERA) | Opponents are hitting .299/.354/.505 so far against Nola, who has allowed nine homers 50⅔ innings. He has an 8.78 ERA over his last three starts. Nola has a 3.26 ERA in 10 regular season starts against the Padres, but he last faced them in 2024 (1-0, 3.86 ERA over two starts).
Padres RHP Randy Vásquez (5-2, 2.96 ERA) | Last week’s start against the Dodgers marked just the second time he did not complete at least five innings. Vásquez has been better on the road (1.46 ERA) than he has so far at Petco Park (4.20 ERA). His only start against the Phillies was in 2024 (4 ⅓ IP, 12 H, 2 BBs, 6 ER).

Phillies LHP Cristopher Sanchez (5-2, 1.62 ERA) | He finished second in NL Cy Young voting last year (13-5, 2.50 ERA) and leads the NL in ERA, ERA+ (264) and FIP (1.96). He also has an 86-to-16 strikeout-to-walk ratio over an MLB-high 72⅓ innings. Sanchez is 3-1 with a 2.05 ERA in four career starts against the Padres, including two wins last year (14 ⅓ IP, 2 ER).
Padres RHP Walker Buehler (3-2, 5.05 ERA) | The Padres have won his last four starts (4.64 ERA), all of which saw Buehler complete against five innings. Righties have a .590 OPS this year against Buehler, compared to lefties’ .800 OPS. Buehler finished last year with the Phillies, allowing one run over 13⅔ innings over three appearances. He also faced the Phillies last year (7 IP, 1 ER) but has a 4.94 ERA in 23⅔ career innings against them.

San Diego: 2B Jake Cronenworth (concussion) played catch on the field Sunday but he remains without a timeline. C Luis Campusano (toe) is also participating in baseball activity as he nears a rehab assignment. RHP Germán Márquez (forearm) is back to throwing bullpens, while RHPs Nick Pivetta (flexor), Joe Musgrove (Tommy John) and Matt Waldron (brachialis) have yet to ramp up throwing programs. RHP Jhony Brito (elbow) is rehabbing at Double-A San Antonio.
