SAN FRANCISCO – Giants ace pitcher Logan Webb is getting closer to returning and might not need another rehab start before doing so.
Manager Tony Vitello offered up the latest update on Webb prior to Monday afternoon’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Oracle Park and said that things are progressing in the right direction for the two-time All-Star pitcher.
“Nothing’s been completely firmed up,” Vitello said. “I know he’s got a bullpen session planned so once that step’s complete we’ll go from there.”
Webb has been out since going on the injured list with right knee bursitis in early May.
Before getting hurt, Webb carried a 2-4 record with a 3.54 ERA in 48 innings, the highest mark of his career since 2020.
In a rehab start with Triple-A Sacramento last Friday, Webb gave up one unearned run and two hits in 3 1/3 innings. Asked if the Giants pitcher would need another rehab start before returning, Vitello didn’t think it would be necessary.
“I don’t envision that,” Vitello said. “No point in completely ruling it out but I don’t envision that happening.”
The unquestioned leader of a starting rotation that has had mixed levels of success this season, Webb’s return ultimately could bring some stability to the group.
“There’s a leadership factor for sure,” Vitello said. “The guys, in my estimation, we’ve been tougher. It’s tough to quantify that in this sport compared to football or something like that but he brings a toughness to the locker room. Then when he’s pounding the strike zone, too, it provides leadership by example.”
