A Northwest Bakersfield soda shop is putting a sweet twist on soft drinks by serving “dirty soda” creations alongside fresh-baked cookies.
Suck It Up Soda Shop, located at Calloway and Olive Drive in the Walmart parking lot, is introducing dirty soda to Bakersfield. Owners said the concept is popular around the country but still new to California.
“It’s your favorite sodas, but elevated with syrups, purees, creamers, and fruit, sugar-free,” one of the owners said. “You can go any way you want on these drinks.”
The shop’s name came from a group brainstorming session among friends. “The name came from the group of us sat around several years ago, panting around ideas for the name. First, we started to say Suck It. We thought, well, let’s just add the up little more conducive with what we’re trying to do here, but really it was a collaboration of friends just coming up with it,” an owner said.
The shop describes a “dirty” soda as a drink made with additions like cream, fruit, syrups and purees.
Customers can choose from several drink sizes: 44 ounces, 32 ounces, 24 ounces and 16 ounces.
Along with the drinks, the shop sells cookies baked in-house, including flavors topped with candy bars and other sweets. Options include a Snickers-topped cookie, a chocolate chunk cookie with three types of chocolate, a Reese’s peanut butter cup cookie and a s’mores cookie.
One staff member said, “Yeah, well, I love the Reese’s cup because it’s peanut butter and chocolate, you can’t go wrong.” Another added, “This s’mores is so good because it has a little bit of graham cracker in it, and a marshmallow. It’s my favorite.”
Suck It Up Soda Shop is open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.
