PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) – The Portland Thorns will face the San Diego Wave in a friendly match next month, the club announced Tuesday.
The June 28 match, which will not count towards the NWSL standings, marks the latest chapter in the emerging rivalry between the two clubs.
Portland bounced San Diego from the playoffs last season, and the clubs have split their two matchups this season.
In addition, the Thorns and Wave are locked in a tight battle near the top of the NWSL standings this season.
Entering play this weekend, Portland (7-2-3, 23 points) holds a slim lead over San Diego, (7-1-4, 22 points) for second place in the league.
Portland trails only the Utah Royals (7-2-2, 23 points), who have played one fewer match but hold a better goal differential, atop the standings. The Thorns host the Royals on Saturday at 1 p.m., with first place in the NWSL on the line.
The Thorns are then off until the friendly against San Diego, which is set for 4 p.m. at Providence Park on June 28.
