Boutique leaves Silver Lake behind
Silver Lake—After nearly two decades of jewelry, apothecary and creative window displays along Rowena Avenue, Clover Silver Lake is moving to South Pasadena. “I’m very sad because I’ve been so lucky to be in Silver Lake for 17 years,” said co-owner Nicole Lopez. But Rowena has become a difficult thoroughfare for her business. “It’s always been a destination, not a walking street with a lot of foot traffic,” she said. Recent street and LADWP activity has made things even harder, and construction along the nearby Glendale-Hyperion Bridge promises to add to the problem, she said. On top of those problems come the rising rents.
The Silver Lake location closed over the weekend, and the new spot at 815 Fair Oaks Ave. in South Pasadena is expected to open by the second week of June. Lopez herself has also moved her home from Silver Lake to Altadena, and many of her old customers have also relocated northeast. “A lot of customers will be happy we’re moving closer to them,” she said.
UK grocery store closing
Eagle Rock—Kitty O’Shea’s Irish and UK Market is closing by May 31 after 7½ years. The owners, in an Instagram post, said that the property at 4692 Eagle Rock Blvd. was sold after they were unable to buy it, and the new owner has other plans for the site. They thanked customers and asked them to stop in for a final shop while some merchandise remains. “These have been the best years of my life.” The grocery store’s upcoming closures comes after nearby READ Books was forced to close due to a rent increase. Its contents are temporarily stored at Eagle Rock City Hall.

Pole-dancing studio opening soon
Echo Park — A new pole-dancing studio is opening in the mini-mall at the corner of Echo Park Avenue and Montana Street, replacing the old Regency Cleaners. This will be the second location for Beehive Pole Studio, which is based out of Pasadena. “We chose Echo Park because it’s such a unique, creative neighborhood and we feel like it’s a perfect fit for Beehive’s vibe and community,” said the owner, Sheila Rubin. “There’s also currently no other pole studio in the immediate area, so we’re really excited and grateful to bring something new to the neighborhood.” She said they hope to open in June.
