(FOX40.COM) — Concept drawings for the Sacramento Zoo’s proposed Land Park expansion were released on Tuesday by the Sacramento Zoological Society’s Board of Trustees.

A non-binding Memorandum of Understanding was approved by the City Council on May 14. According to zoo officials, the MOU outlines the process of potential expansion of the Sacramento Zoo in Land Park.

The proposal, currently under consideration by the Sacramento City Council, originally referenced the following:

A 4.4-acre parcel across Land Park Drive, which was previously used for a private pony ride operation and is now vacant

A 1.4-acre parcel on the northern boundary of the existing zoo, which included a memorial fountain and statue dedicated to early Sacramento resident Charles Swanston

Following the community’s feedback concerning the historical significance of the Swanston statue, the zoo changed the proposal to exclude the fountain and statue from the expansion, zoo officials said.

“The Sacramento Zoo has been a part of the fabric of this community for nearly 100 years,” Zoological Society Board President Elizabeth Stallard said. “We are committed to being thoughtful community partners and believe this refinement of our proposal resolves the primary concern raised by our neighbors and still provides the additional space we need to commit to a future in Land Park for the next 100 years.”
