WASHINGTON TWP. – Sometimes every stroke really does count.
That was ever apparent at Wednesday’s Division 1 Greystone boys golf regional.
Three teams tied for first place and the regional champion went down to the fifth-man tie-breaker to decide the official winner. Talk about a dramatic finish where every single stroke really counted.
Rochester Adams, Troy and Port Huron Northern tied with a play-five, count-four team score of 308 with Adams getting the championship nod thanks to its No. 5 golfer shooting an 81. Troy’s shot and 86 and Port Huron Northern’s an 88 to decide the top three pecking order in the official standings.
The three schools do share one thing in common, as they all earned state qualifying berths to the Division 1 state finals June 5-6 at Ferris State University’s Katke Course.
The top three teams plus the top three finishers not on the top three teams all advance to the state finals.
But the rarity and unlikelihood finish of three teams shooting the same team score was on display at Greystone Golf Course in Washington Township.
“I’ve never seen anything like it in golf,” offered first-year Adams coach Dan Cromie, whose team entered the postseason ranked sixth in Division 1. “I was just like holding my breath the last hour. I didn’t know where we would finish. It was so close that every stroke really did count. It was crazy. That was a wild finish.
“I’m thankful for these guys putting in the work and helping us continue our strong tradition of Adams golf that goes back many years,” continued Cromie. “The boys stepped up today. This is not an easy course and it was so close. It really took all five golfers for us to advance and win the tournament.”
Meanwhile, Utica Eisenhower junior Dylan Zahuranic carded a three-under par round of 69 to earn medalist honors in the 102-golfer field. He led the individual qualifiers that included the Davison duo of Max Morris (75) William Latchana (75), who both tied for fifth overall.
“I was consistent and I played it safe. Hitting irons off the tee and my putting was really good today,” said Zahuranic. “It feels great, it really does with all of these great golfers here today.

“It was an unfortunate finish for one of my (team) partners and we didn’t qualify as a team, but it’s still gratifying to be able to (qualify) and represent Eisenhower.”
Eisenhower posted a highly-respectable team score of 310, but that was only good for fourth overall in the 21-school field and led the teams left on the outside looking in terms of state qualifying efforts.
Davison finished fifth (312), while Lake Orion (321), Macomb Dakota (323), Rochester (325), Troy Athens (327) and Rochester Stoney Creek (328) rounded out the top 10 in the team standings. Oxford (332), Harrison Township L’Anse Creuse (333), Romeo (334), Sterling Heights Stevenson (334) and Anchor Bay (345) took the next five slots in the loaded field.
Zahuranic had lots of company in the individual standings, as 25 golfers shot 79 or better and 28 golfers carded rounds of 80 or lower in the highly-competitive field.
All five of Adams’ golfers finished in the top 30 of the deep field including two finishers in the top 10. Freshman Ben Vento led the Highlanders by placing third with a one-under round of 71. Junior Nick Smith tied for seventh with a 76, while sophomore Zander Cipa finished tied for 26th with an 80 and both junior Drew Rzeppa and senior Austin Kaczocha both shot 81s to tie for 29th overall in the individual standings.
Following Eisenhower’s Zahuranic, Port Huron Northern’s Draven Rogers finished one stroke back with a two-under round of 70 to lead the Huskies. Adams’ Vento was third, Troy’s Rodrigo Dugarte claimed fourth (72), Davison’s Morris and Latchana tied for fifth (75), Troy’s Ishan Saparia (76), Sterling Heights Stevenson’s Timothy Meister (76), Lake Orion’s Quinn Thomas (76), Eisenhower’s Zach Morrison (76) and Adams’ Smith (76) all tied for seventh overall.
Rochester’s Finley Hodister (77), Dakota’s Jozef Ivezxaj (77) and Port Huron Northern’s Romen Ruiz (77) all tied for 12th, while there were seven competitors who tied for 15th with scores of 78 in the deep field.
For Troy, Dugarte (72), Ishan Saparia (76, seventh), Alex Wang (78, 15th) and Michael Malenfant (82, 35th) comprised of the Colts’ runner-up team score.
Following Rogers, Romen Ruiz (77, 12th), Bryce Rossow (78, 15th) and Robbie Mossett (83, 40th) led Port Huron Northern’s third-place showing.
Eisenhower’s fourth-place finish was guided by the state-qualifying Zahuranic (69), Zach Moprrison (76), Stefanos Vlahos (79) and Sebastian Kolodziej (86) but the Eagles came up agonizingly short by two strokes.
