A California health official has been charged with vehicular manslaughter after a bride-to-be was killed in an alleged hit-and-run.
Katie Osorio, a 27-year-old living in San Diego, was waiting for the bus on Friday, May 22 when police say a car drifted from the rightmost lane and onto the sidewalk, colliding with the enclosed bus stop. The car then fled the scene, where Katie was left beneath the crushed structure, per local station 10 News.
“There were people notifying us, the car reversed, and did go over the body again,” Katie’s cousin, Evelin, told the outlet. She added of the driver, “I have no words. She didn’t think twice to stop.”

Katie was rushed to the hospital thereafter, and she later died from the injuries she sustained in the crash.
In a GoFundMe page set up in her memory, Katie’s cousin Angelica Osorio said she was a “devoted daughter, cousin, and friend who worked tirelessly in San Diego to support her mother in Mexico.” At the time of the crash, Katie was working two jobs while also running a business back home, and she was set to get married in July, per 10 News.
“Her determination, strength, and love for her family touched everyone who knew her,” Angelica wrote in the post. “Our family is devastated by this sudden loss, and we are doing everything we can to honor her memory and support her loved ones during this heartbreaking time.”
The Osorio family’s GoFundMe aims to cover expenses related to the crime that killed Katie.
Following the crash, San Diego police located the driver, 41-year-old Assmaa Elayyat, and arrested her on charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. 10 News reported Elayyat was not charged with a DUI.
Elayyat is the Deputy Director of Self-Sufficiency Services for the county’s Health and Human Services Agency, and has been in the county’s employ for six years, per 10 News. Elayyat was released on $50,000 bail, and she’s expected to appear in court on Monday, June 1.

“I don’t understand how someone who advocates for the community and health doesn’t stop,” Evelin told the outlet. “It’s evil… You ran her over twice. You had no mercy, treated her like an object.”
The Osorio family, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office and the San Diego Health and Human Services Agency did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment in time for publication.
