A pedestrian died after a driver struck four people early Monday near 16th and Mission streets, one of San Francisco’s busiest transit and commercial corridors, police said Thursday.
San Francisco police officers responded at about 12:13 a.m. Monday to a vehicle collision in the area and found a pedestrian being treated by paramedics for life-threatening injuries, according to a police email cited by Mission Local. The person was taken to a hospital and later died.
Three other pedestrians were evaluated at the crash site for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.
Police later found the suspected vehicle and detained the occupant.
The victim’s name had not been released. The Police Department’s Traffic Collision Investigations Unit is investigating the crash.
Walk San Francisco, a pedestrian advocacy group, said the person killed Monday was the ninth pedestrian to die in a San Francisco traffic crash this year, with all but one involving a pedestrian.
Last month, 74-year-old Dannielle Spillman was hit and killed near Mission Street and South Van Ness Avenue, about four blocks from the scene of Monday’s crash.
In Spillman’s death, San Francisco prosecutors charged Valantino Cash Amil with murder and other counts, according to the District Attorney’s Office. Amil has pleaded not guilty.
