With less than two weeks until the start of the FIFA World Cup, excitement is building across the Bay Area.
Workers on Friday assembled a giant Adidas “Trionda” soccer ball at San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose.
The installation is one of just 16 being created for World Cup host cities and will serve as a centerpiece for fans ahead of the tournament.
The oversized soccer ball will stand about 10 feet tall and 8 feet wide once completed, welcoming visitors and soccer enthusiasts to the area.
San Pedro Square is also set for a major transformation during the World Cup. Organizers plan to convert roughly 30,000 square feet of surrounding streets into a fan zone that will host watch parties and other experiences throughout the tournament.
The venue will show all 104 World Cup matches across 34 match days, giving fans a place to gather and celebrate the world’s biggest sporting event.
