Plank, the popular Oakland entertainment venue known for its bowling lanes, restaurant and bar patio, will permanently close in Jack London Square this August.
The establishment said on social media that persistent revenue declines over the past two years, as well as rising expenses, have made operations financially unsustainable, according to a statement to customers.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the upcoming permanent closing of Plank,” the company said.
The closure comes as Dave & Buster’s, a national chain, opened a new 33,000-square-foot arcade, restaurant and sports bar at 55 Harrison St., about two blocks away from Plank.
Plank opened in 2014 and became a fixture on Oakland’s waterfront, known as a family-friendly spot for parties, corporate events and community gatherings. The entertainment venue said it will continue operating until Aug. 2.
Customers with events booked after that date will receive full refunds of their deposits, according to the announcement.
Plank’s management also urged customers holding gift cards or game cards to redeem them before the closure date, after which the card will no longer be valid.
“For the next couple of months, there is more fun to be had,” the company said in its farewell message. “We look forward to seeing you soon.”
The impending closure will add to the vacancy rate in Jack London Square, which has struggled over the years to draw foot traffic and retain businesses.
