One teen was killed and three others were injured early Saturday after the car they were riding in launched over a barrier on Interstate 80 in San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood and fell 25 feet, according to the California Highway Patrol. 

Around 1:30 a.m., an eastbound gray Chevrolet Camaro collided with a Recology semitruck, sending both vehicles into sand barrels near the Seventh Street off-ramp. The truck came to a halt on the off-ramp blocking traffic, and the Camaro was catapulted over the freeway railings before falling into a San Francisco Police Department impound lot off Seventh Street. 

After impact, the car collided with several parked vehicles in the lot before flipping end over end and coming to a rest upside down on top of another car, according to Mark Andrews, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol’s San Francisco division. 

The driver of the car, an 18-year-old, was able to get out of the car on his own, Andrews said. Emergency responders with the San Francisco Fire Department arrived to extricate the other three passengers, including a 17-year old riding in the front seat and two 18-year-olds in the back. 

Fire department personnel had to use the Jaws of Life to get to the two teens in the back seat during the lengthy extrication, Andrews said. One of them was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, and the other was pronounced dead at the scene around 1:50 a.m. The driver and front seat passenger both had moderate injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. All three survivors were wearing seat belts, but the passenger who died was not, Andrews said. 

The driver of the Recology truck did not appear to have any major injuries and was not taken to a hospital. 

The crash occurred after the Camaro made an “unsafe turning movement” into the truck from the left, Andrews said. Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to have played a part in the crash, and both drivers have cooperated with authorities, he said. It was not immediately clear Saturday how fast either vehicle was driving at the time, but Andrews said the CHP is looking into the speeds.  

The crash closed three lanes of the interstate as well as the off-ramp for several hours early Saturday before they reopened around 5:45 a.m.
