(FOX40.COM) — Sacramento County Board of Supervisors member Phil Serna is not running for reelection, leaving open the board’s District 1 seat for the first time in more than a decade.

District 1 covers Downtown Sacramento, East Sacramento, Natomas, Oak Park and stretches out west to include the airport.

Here’s who’s running for the nonpartisan position. Candidates listed in alphabetical order.

Flojaune Cofer

Dr. Flojaune Cofer is an epidemiologist who has previously worked for the state and served on a number of city boards like the Sacramento Active Transport Commission.

Cofer came close to being Sacramento’s mayor in 2024, losing out to current Mayor Kevin McCarty by less than two percentage points.

Issues important to Cofer include homelessness, improving public transportation and making housing more affordable.

Eric Guerra

Eric Guerra currently serves as a Sacramento city councilmember representing District 6, a position he has held since 2016.

Guerra points to work on renter protections and support for services for immigrants as part of why he is the best fit for the county supervisor seat.

Deborah Ortiz

Deborah Ortiz has previously served on the Sacramento City Council and as a member of the California State Legislature.

Much of Ortiz’s career both in office and out of it has centered around public health.

Tim Riley

Tim Riley is a computer programmer living in South Natomas.

Among other issues, Riley advocates for a bigger county jail and for free community college.
