“The house began as a simple one-bedroom, one-bathroom loft in the 1930s,” says the current owner and seller Joan Sotomayor. “Belden, who built it, was known for his peeled log interior beams and high ceilings in modified A-frame cabins.”

Belden was also the founder of Pinecraft Furniture Co.; his handcrafted pieces have since become sought-after collectibles throughout the Mountain West. That legacy can still be felt throughout the cabin’s interiors, where rustic details and vintage craftsmanship remain front and center.

Over the decades, the home has evolved without abandoning its original footprint.

Sotomayor notes that the back porch was eventually enclosed to create a dining room, while a larger addition in the 1980s introduced a new front entrance, an additional bathroom, and a spacious primary bedroom with dramatic vaulted ceilings and an arched window designed to capture moonlight.

However, this work was carried out with careful consideration of the original structure, which remains largely unaltered, save for the added space.

“Luckily, the original cabin remains largely intact after the addition,” she says.

Located just minutes from downtown Idyllwild and close to several hiking trails, the cabin also offers easy access to the mountain town’s year-round outdoor culture.

“The house is near Highway 243, just five minutes to Idyllwild and several hiking trails,” she says. “In winter, the nearby streets are great sledding hills!”

Idyllwild has long been known as an artsy and quirky retreat, where famous Angelenos head when they need a break from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. Dolly Parton once owned her own cabin in the area, which she is said to have used when she needed to escape the public eye—along with her late husband, Carl Dean.

Lucille Ball, Michael J. Fox, and Doris Day are among the other celebrities who have owned homes in the area over the years. However, it’s possible that no A-lister can compete with Idyllwild’s most beloved local icon: its doggy mayor.

The tradition of electing a pooch to the position began in 2012 as a bid to support a local animal charity, with residents paying a single dollar to cast their vote for which pup should be given the prestigious honor.
