Hazel Park Puts Moratorium on New STR Licenses Following Fatal Shooting

(City of Hazel Park, May 31, 2026)

Hazel Park, MI – The City of Hazel Park is deeply saddened by the tragic shooting that occurred in our community. This was a senseless act of violence.

The City takes this incident very seriously. It appears the short-term rental was in violation of our occupancy restrictions at the time. This is unacceptable, and we will be taking the appropriate measures to enforce our existing ordinance.

Effective immediately, the City of Hazel Park will be implementing a 6-month moratorium on the issuance of new short-term rental (STR) licenses. During this period, city staff and leadership will conduct a comprehensive review of our short-term rental ordinance and enforcement practices to ensure they are as strong as possible under the constraints of state law.

Our residents deserve to feel safe in their homes and neighborhoods. Our police department is currently investigating this incident and will take whatever steps necessary to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

On May 29 at 1:16am Hazel Park Police received multiple 911 calls of a shooting in the area of Powell and Orchard. Officers arrived on scene to see a crowd of people fleeing from a home on Powell. Officers located a male victim outside the home and a female victim several houses south of the home. Both victims were transported to a hospital. The male victim was pronounced dead.

Preliminary information is the house may have been hosting an “after prom” party when some dispute took place and persons exchanged gunfire while in and outside the home. Detectives are obtaining search warrants and investigating.
