(KRON) — Oakland’s Jack London Square is set to lose another business. Plank, the bar restaurant and entertainment zone that’s been a cornerstone of the historic waterfront destination for a decade, is closing this summer.

A Plank employee told KRON4.com that the popular establishment will close permanently on Aug. 2. Plank first opened in 2014 and offered Oaklanders a unique blend of food, drinks and activities with bowling, bocce, an interactive arcade, and a waterfront beer garden, all in one location.

The business is citing a significant drop in business combined with rising costs as reasons behind the closure.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the upcoming permanent closing of Plank on Sunday, August 2, 2026,” a statement posted to the Plank website Friday read. “Unfortunately, due to persistent and significant drops in sales during the past two years combined with steadily rising costs, the business is no longer viable, and we are forced to shut our doors.”

The 50,000-square-foot location in the heart of Jack London Square billed itself as “a community anchor” that was committed to the Oakland community. In addition to serving patrons, contributed to local organizations like Meals on One Wheel, Arts for Oakland Kids, and Stephen and Ayesha Curry’s Eat, Play, Learn foundation.

“It has been a memorable run of nearly 12 years since we first opened our doors in 2014,” the restaurant’s statement continued. “We greatly appreciate our Oakland community and the close relationships we’ve made over the years. plank was created specifically for Oakland, and we thank you for embracing us as Oakland’s own.”

News of Plank’s closure comes just weeks after the opening of a location of the popular arcade chain bar Dave & Buster’s in Jack London Square. It also follows a spate of restaurant closures at the location.

“We’re sorry to see this valued Oakland business make this difficult decision,” Mayor Barbara Lee told KRON4. “We know businesses in entertainment and hospitality are navigating real pressures, high operating costs, post-pandemic shifts in foot traffic, and a competitive market, and we’re grateful for the years they’ve contributed to the life of Jack London Square and the memories made at Plank over the years.

“We hope Oaklanders and visitors will make a point to enjoy everything they have to offer before their August closure.”

In the past two years, Jack London Square has seen the departure of Forge Pizza, Left Bank Brasserie, Dokkaebier Taproom, Ginza Sushi, Tiger’s Taproom, Miga Taqueria, Timeless Coffee and Minimo Wine Shop.
