Re “San Diego trash fee deal gets everybody off the hook, somewhat” (May 24): Former San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer deserves thanks for his role in the restoration of free Balboa Park parking. He was understandably ebullient at the May 22 announcement, telling reporters, “It’s good to be back.”
Not so fast. Faulconer will always be remembered as the father of the 101 Ash Street debacle, the worst financial crisis in the city’s history. If he had ever accepted any responsibility, or even offered some explanation about how the deal imploded, he might have a shot at political rehabilitation.
But Faulconer slinked out of office without paying any price for the harm he caused San Diego. He is mistaken if he thinks we will forgive and forget. He will deservedly carry the stink of 101 Ash well into the future.
