A San Francisco jury convicted a man of assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery and other charges in connection with a 2023 incident in which he slashed a woman’s neck in an unprovoked attack in the city’s Inner Sunset neighborhood.

Prosecutors said Lopez walked past the victim, who was not identified, on the 1200 block of Funston Avenue in July of 2023 and slashed the left side of her neck without provocation. Lopez was arrested just minutes after the incident about four blocks away from where the slashing took place, prosecutors said.

The knife used in the attack was found on the pathway Lopez walked after fleeing the scene, prosecutors said. The woman was hospitalized and required 16 stitches.

“There is no place for senseless violence in our community like this and my office will continue to do everything we can to protect public safety and fight for justice in the courtroom,” District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said in a statement. “I hope this verdict brings the victim some measure of closure as they work to heal from this traumatic incident.”

Lopez was scheduled to be sentenced in late June and was in custody as of Tuesday afternoon.
