Los Angeles County has more than 5.8 million registered voters, which is more registered voters that most states. That’s just one reason election night results might take time to process in the Tuesday primary.
After voter centers closed at 8 p.m. all ballots are sealed, secured and transported by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies to the county’s sprawling ballot processing center in the City of Industry. The building is a large warehouse-style structure.
Counts on election night include ballots cast at more than 600 county Vote Centers throughout the 10-day early voting period and Election Day and Vote by Mail ballots received and processed up until Monday before Election Day.
The count continues well after election night and includes Vote by Mail ballots received on Election Day, provisional ballots, write-in ballots and damaged ballots. California law requires county election officials to certify result with 30 days of the election.
