Early election night results are in for several state Legislature seats, less than an hour after voting centers closed across California at 8 p.m. Tuesday.
In California’s jungle-primary system, the top two voters in state races, regardless of political party affiliation, advance to a runoff in the November general election.
California Senate District 2
In the three-way race to succeed state Sen. Mike McGuire, early unofficial election results show Democratic Assemblymember Damon Connolly taking a commanding lead over two Republicans vying for a spot on the November ballot, according to the California Secretary of State. Connolly was leading with 74.9% of the vote, followed by Republicans Tief Gibbs and Aaron Smith, holding 18.6% and 6.4% of vote, respectively, as of 8:16 p.m.
The 2nd District seat is being vacated by McGuire, who has held the seat since 2014 and is now running for Congress. The district stretches along the coast of Northern California, reaching from the San Francisco Bay up to the Oregon border. It encompasses seven counties, including Del Norte, Humboldt, Lake, Marin, Mendocino, Trinity, and parts of Sonoma.

California State Assembly District 2
Democratic incumbent Chris Rogers, with 65.2% of the vote, according to early unofficial returns posted by the Secretary of State at 9:16 p.m., held an advantage over Republican Michael Greer, with 34.8% of the vote. Both are expected to face off in a rematch in November.
Rogers has held the seat since 2024. The district contains Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino and Trinity counties and a portion of Sonoma County. The district runs along the coast and is one of the biggest assembly districts by northern part of the state.
California State Assembly District 4
Democrat Cecilia Aguiar-Curry is running unopposed for reelection.
Aguiar-Curry has held the 4th District seat since 2016. The district encompasses most of Wine Country, including Colusa, Lake, Napa and Yolo counties and a small section of Sonoma County.
California State Assembly District 12
Early unofficial election results at 9:06 p.m. Tuesday show Republican Eryn Cervantes in the lead with 25.7% of the vote, followed by Democrats Eric Lucan at 24.0%, Jackie Elward at 20.9%, Holli Thier at 13.8% and both Eli Beckman and Steve Shwartz at 7.8% of the vote.
The six candidates are vying to replace Connolly, who is vacating the 12th District seat he assumed in 2022 to run for state Senate. The district includes Marin County and a portion of Sonoma County.
The first report of votes Tuesday includes ballots cast at vote centers through Monday and processed mail-in ballots. Following the initial results, numbers are posted in two-hour intervals on election night until all live ballots are counted. Then mail-in ballots will be counted with reports released at least twice a week until June 15. The final count will be certified no later than July 1, according to election officials.
