Los Angeles Unified school board incumbents appeared headed for re-election Tuesday, according to early returns, leaving the current leadership of the seven-member board largely intact.
The board oversees the nation’s second-largest school district, serving nearly 400,000 students across Los Angeles and surrounding communities.
The election comes as LAUSD faces an estimated $877 million structural budget deficit for the 2026-27 school year, declining enrollment, recent labor tensions that nearly resulted in a teachers strike and ongoing leadership uncertainty following Superintendent Alberto Carvalho’s placement on paid leave earlier this year.

Here’s where Los Angeles Unified School District races stood as of 10:17 p.m., according to results released by the Los Angeles County registrar’s office.
District 2
Incumbent and board vice president Rocío Rivas led with 61.59% of the vote, while her challenger, Raquel Zamora, a teacher and counselor with 20 years of experience with LAUSD, received 38.41%
Because only two candidates are competing in the race, the winner will be determined in the June election.

The district includes Boyle Heights, Downtown LA, East Los Angeles, Echo Park, El Sereno, Highland Park Garvanza, Hermon, Highland Park, Historic Filipinotown, Lincoln Heights, Los Feliz, MacArthur Park, Solano Canyon and Westlake.
District 4
Incumbent Nick Melvoin captured 67.58% of the vote, ahead of Ankur Patel, an educator and the current outreach director for the Hindu University of America, who earned 32.42%.
Because only two candidates are competing in the race, the winner will be determined in the June election.

District 4 include communities on the Westside and in the western San Fernando Valley, including Brentwood, Del Rey, Encino, Hollywood, Mar Vista, Marina Del Rey, Pacific Palisades, Playa Del Rey, Playa Vista, Reseda, Tarzana, Topanga, Westchester, West Hollywood, Westwood, Woodland Hills and Venice.
District 6
Incumbent Kelly Gonez, who was first elected to the board in 2017, appeared headed for another term after facing only a write-in-challenger in District 6.

The district includes communities in the eastern San Fernando Valley, including Arleta, North Hollywood, Panorama City, San Fernando, Sun Valley, Sylmar and Toluca Lake.
