Police arrested a 28-year-old Berkeley man Tuesday on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend, who was found dead in a California Street apartment Saturday.
The 37-year-old woman, whom authorities have not yet identified, “appears to have died after a physical assault,” Berkeley police spokesperson Officer Byron White said in an email.
A property manager called police around noon Saturday after discovering the woman, police said.
Police did not clarify how they arrived on the woman’s boyfriend, Damarcus David Jones, as their suspect. They arrested him Tuesday in Dixon, and he was in custody at the city jail as of Tuesday night.
The Alameda County Prosecutor’s Office has not formally charged Jones yet, according to court records. He is scheduled for arraignment Thursday in Oakland.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office’s Coroner’s Bureau has yet to finish an autopsy, police said.
“We are grateful for the community’s ongoing support and thankful we were able to swiftly bring this suspect to justice,” White wrote.
