Re “San Diego voters rejecting measure that would heavily tax second homes” (June 2): The repudiation of Measure A was simply the people of San Diego telling Todd Gloria, Sean Elo-Rivera, Joe LaCava and the others what they think about all their policies, including parking at Balboa Park and the trash fiasco.

Go ahead, try a new city tax.

— Richard Harmetz, San Diego

Another of Elo-Rivera’s proposals to tax San Diego citizens is defeated. Rather than face the reality that the city has a spending problem, he has floated a number of irresponsible initiatives to further burden taxpayers. Instead he should be critically looking at reducing programs that serve no public benefit and that are not in the purview of traditional city operations. He should focus on reducing redundant staffing (including his own) and stop placating the employee unions that support him. Meanwhile, city services and our infrastructure decline.
