FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Updated results for California’s Primary Election continue to shape several key races across the state and in Fresno County as officials work through remaining ballots.

Governor’s Race

With 60% of precincts reporting statewide, Republican Steve Hilton maintains a narrow lead in the race for governor with more than 1.5 million votes, or 32%.

Former U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra is close behind with nearly 1.47 million votes, representing 31% of the vote.

Democrat Tom Steyer remains in contention with 24%, while Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco trails with 13%.

If the results hold, Hilton and Becerra would advance to the November election in what is expected to be one of California’s most closely watched races.

Fresno County Supervisor District 1

One of the most competitive local races is Fresno County Supervisor District 1, where six candidates were vying to replace longtime Supervisor Brian Pacheco, who is running for the State Assembly.

With all precincts reporting, Fresno City Councilmember Mike Karbassi leads with 35% of the vote.

Former Fresno Unified Trustee Maria Pacheco is in second place with 27%.

If those results stand, Karbassi and Pacheco will face off in November.

The district covers portions of Fresno, including west and central Fresno communities, and the winner will help shape county decisions on public safety, housing, infrastructure, and county services.

Fresno County Superintendent of Schools

The race for Fresno County Superintendent of Schools is also headed to a runoff.

Incumbent Dr. Michelle Cantwell-Copher finished first with 43% of the vote but fell short of the majority needed to avoid a November contest.

Dr. Eimear O’Brien secured second place with 30%, while Dr. Johnny Alvarado finished close behind with 27%.

The superintendent oversees the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools office, which provides support services to the county’s 32 school districts and serves tens of thousands of students across the region.

Education funding, student achievement, workforce development, and support for rural districts have been among the issues highlighted during the campaign.

Los Angeles Mayor

In California’s largest city, incumbent Mayor Karen Bass is leading with 35% of the vote with 64% of precincts reporting.

Reality star Spencer Pratt has emerged as a surprise second-place candidate with 29%, while Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman remains in contention as vote counting continues.

The top two finishers will move on to the November election if current trends hold.

What’s Next?

Election officials across California will continue counting ballots.

The counting could take days or weeks, but the election must be certified by July 10th.
