Did you know that L.A.’s elegant French restaurant République is housed in a historic building commissioned by Charlie Chaplin? The intricate ironwork and exposed brick make for a compelling setting to enjoy République’s spectacular menu, but many guests are still unaware of the space’s Old Hollywood roots.

Here’s a closer look.

Charlie Chaplin’s connection to République

Charlie Chaplin arrived in Los Angeles in 1913 and remained in the city until 1952, when he moved to England. During his nearly 4 decades working in L.A., Chaplin owned a mansion in Beverly Hills and a collection of “storybook” cottages in West Hollywood.

In 1928, Charlie Chaplin commissioned architect Roy Seldon Price to design the historic building at 624 S La Brea Avenue. It was intended as a mixed-use space with shops, offices, and an interior tiled courtyard, with a Spanish and Gothic Revival style. After housing retailers and rental offices in the 1940s and 1950s, the renowned Campanile restaurant and La Brea Bakery opened there in 1989.

When Campanile closed in 2012, République owners Walter and Margarita Manzke worked with architect Osvaldo Maoizzi to bring the design back to its roots. They honored the building’s original components, such as the brick walls and fountain, and added more period fixtures and furniture to complement the historical elements.

These days, the culinary offerings at République blend wonderfully with its unique architectural embellishments, making for one of the best restaurant experiences in Los Angeles.

Visiting République

République offers an outstanding menu with a blend of French and Californian influences. The space includes a casual bakery and cafe in the front, featuring delicate pastries and breads, and a more formal dining area in the back where guests can enjoy everything from a hearty weekend brunch to an indulgent main dinner course.

Diners often regard République as one of the best dining spots in the city, affirmed by its high rating on review sites and Google.
