The FBI arrested three men Friday, including a Lakeside man, for allegedly conspiring to support ISIS, including providing funds they believed would go toward a plot to kill U.S. servicemembers overseas.

Bereen Dzayee, 25, of Lakeside, is charged; along with Bisaam Ghafoor, 21, of Leawood, Kansas; and Elias Shamsaldeen, 21, of Porterville, in California’s Tulare County; according to the Department of Justice.

Prosecutors allege the men collectively gave $2,000 to someone they believed was a member of ISIS, with the belief that the money would be used to help purchase rocket-propelled grenades and drones.

NBC 7 found photos on a social media page of one of Dzayee’s family members. Multiple neighbors, including a former classmate, confirmed to NBC 7 that the photos are of Dzayee. One of them appears to show Dzayee wearing a Navy sailor’s uniform; many of those same neighbors confirmed that Dzayee had served in the military.

A complaint filed in Kansas federal court alleges the men exchanged messages over the course of more than a year detailing their intentions, which included traveling out of the country to fight for ISIS, the DOJ alleges.

Prosecutors said Dzayee suggested U.S. Special Forces be targeted by drones in an attack, while Shamsaldeen allegedly said he wanted to stab and injure a U.S. servicemember.

The DOJ also claimed Ghafoor said it would be “sick” if his name was written on a drone used in an attack, allegedly said he wanted to behead a female soldier, and stated, “I wish I could kill 300,000,000 Americans.”

Neighbors told NBC 7 that Dzayee lives in a house on what they describe as normally a quiet cul-de-sac, until around 6 a.m. on Friday.

“We looked out — it seemed to me like it was a white van that pulled up and tactical guys jumped out and surrounded the house,” a neighbor told NBC 7. “Very odd in this neighborhood. So the neighbors started coming out. We didn’t approach but we were watching.”

The agents spent the next several hours going through the interior of the home as well as the garage, and talking with Dzayee’s parents.

“You immediately — you see Terrorist Task Force, your alarms go up,” the neighbor added. “I actually walked up to the FBI agent and asked if the house was going to blow up, should the neighborhood be concerned, and he assured me, ‘No, we’re arresting someone is all we got.”

Residents said Dzayee wasn’t much for socializing.

“He doesn’t really speak to folks around here, which is again unusual for this neighborhood,” the man who lives nearby told NBC 7.
