What’s that smoke? Sacramento County fire officials execute controlled burns near American River

If you live in Sacramento and see smoke in the sky, it’s likely due to a controlled burn. These fires are started by fire officials to reduce wildfire risk.Sacramento County Regional Parks is working with the Sacramento Fire Department and the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District to execute prescribed burns throughout June. The first of those began in the Woodlake Area of American River Parkway Sunday and will continue through Tuesday. Fire crews intentionally set these fires to to remove dry brush and grass before it becomes a catalyst for an actual wildfire. Controlled burns also allow firefighters to train for potential emergency situations.Here are the rest of the burns planned in Sacramento County for June, according to the Regional Parks website: Dry Creek Parkway — One-day operation, anticipated to begin as early as June 11Illa M.
