No tsunami threat to California after 7.8 Philippines earthquake

There was no tsunami threat detected in California after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake rattled the Philippines on Sunday afternoon, officials said. 

The National Tsunami Warning Center determined there was no tsunami danger along the U.S. Pacific Coast in the wake of the large earthquake, according to the National Weather Service. 

The earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines shortly after 4:30 p.m. Pacific time, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. 

Meteorologists quickly evaluated the threat of a subsequent tsunami in surrounding regions. 

While California was in the clear, the weather service issued a tsunami advisory for Guam and said there was a potential threat in Papua New Guinea, Taiwan and Indonesia.
