You never know what’s going to happen during a night out in the Castro. This weekend, that was even more apparent when R&B singer Lizzo stopped by Market Street bar the Lookout, and reportedly bought shots for the bar.
A video posted by SF Examiner opinion editor Ali Wunderman showed Lizzo strutting into the bar to cheers and camera phones held high, with a caption outlining her generosity. Another video posted by LGBTQ advocacy nonprofit Impulse showed Lizzo singing into a fan that she wielded theatrically. Both videos were reposted by the Lookout. (The bar could not be reached for comment by time of publication.)
The appearance follows a similar recent surprise visit to New York City drag club Pisces Bar.
Lizzo was in town for a signing at Amoeba Music on Saturday promoting her new album “Bitch,” which was officially released on Friday. She also performed at a private Oracle Park show Saturday night hosted by biotechnology company Genetech which featured a star-studded lineup including The Killers, Benson Boone and Ludacris.
On her last visit to San Francisco in 2022, she played at the Chase Center. Beforehand, she had something of a flute emergency, requiring immediate repair of her favorite flute, nicknamed Sasha. She called upon local music shop Flute World to come to Chase Center for emergency repairs (which she compared to a Brazilian butt wax for her instrument). In the process, the shop sold her a platinum flute, similar to ones that sell in the shop for approximately $40,000.
After a meteoric rise on the pop charts in the late 2010s, Lizzo has had a tough few years. In 2023, three of her dancers filed a lawsuit accusing her of sexual harassment, body shaming and creating a toxic work environment. Soon, another lawsuit against her production company came from a fashion designer. The body shaming allegations have been dismissed, but the rest of the charges are still pending. Lizzo has claimed no wrong-doing and declared she will fight the allegations in court.
