FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Drivers across Fresno were cited in large numbers during a recent crackdown on distracted driving, with 113 motorists ticketed for hands-free cell phone violations during an enforcement operation on Friday.

California has had distracted driving laws on the books since 2008.

Under the law, drivers are not allowed to hold a phone or other electronic device while driving, including while talking, texting, or using an app.

Using a handheld cell phone while driving is punishable by a fine.

A second hands-free law violation within 36 months of a prior conviction for the same offense results in a point being added to a driver’s record.

Drivers who need to take an important call or program directions are urged to pull over to a safe parking spot.

Before driving, motorists are advised to silence their phones or put them out of reach.

Funding for the enforcement program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
