A United Airlines flight bound for Chicago returned safely to San Francisco International Airport Monday morning after the crew reported a mechanical issue, the airline said.
United Flight 1568, an Airbus A321neo traveling from SFO to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, had 195 passengers and six crew members aboard, according to the airline.
“Customers deplaned normally at the gate and we’ve arranged for another aircraft to take them to Chicago,” a United spokesman said in a statement.
The airline did not immediately specify the nature of the mechanical problem.
Flight-tracking data showed the flight departed SFO in the morning and returned to the airport before continuing later on another aircraft.
Aviation tracking site AirLive reported that the aircraft broadcast transponder code 7700, an emergency code used to alert air traffic control to a distress or urgency condition.
The Federal Aviation Administration says pilots may squawk code 7700 when a distress or urgency condition is encountered, and they want to alert ground radar facilities.
No injuries were reported in United’s statement. Passengers deplaned normally at the gate, the airline said.
