SAN JOSE — A Monday morning shooting in the parking lot of a Kaiser Permanente medical complex in South San Jose ended with a man dead and a woman wounded in what police described as a bout of “isolated” violence with detectives still working to determine how it unfolded.
Gunfire was reported at 10:14 a.m. in an outdoor lot on Cottle Road just north of where Beswick Drive turns into Raleigh Road. The block, on the western side of Cottle, houses a series of nondescript medical offices across the street from a busy shopping plaza.
San Jose Police Department spokesperson Stacie Shih said Monday that responding officers found a man and woman lying near one another, each suffering from gunshot injuries. The two were rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries; the man, who has not been formally identified, later died.
Shih said the wounded woman was listed in critical but stable condition as of Monday afternoon.
In the wake of the shooting, staff at the medical offices sheltered in place, and appointments were canceled, according to an employee who was not authorized to speak publicly. A Kaiser spokesperson deferred to SJPD when asked for comment on the incident.
Police are describing the man as the shooting suspect who brought a gun to the site, but did not disclose how he was shot, citing the ongoing investigation. The woman was described strictly as being a victim in the encounter.
In calling the violence an “isolated incident,” police and later Shih said there was no ongoing threat to public safety. She added that the man and woman knew each other but that police were not prepared to characterize their relationship or disclose any motive or circumstances that preceded the shooting.
