Two people died after a chaotic traffic stop in Oakland on Monday involving a stolen car, officials said.
Around 11 a.m., an officer from the Oakland Housing Authority Police Department, a subsidiary of the Oakland Police Department, tried to pull over a car driving “recklessly” near East 12th Street, the OPD said in a statement. When the car didn’t stop, the officer didn’t pursue it.
The suspect allegedly continued to drive “recklessly” and later crashed into an OPD car driving northbound on 29th Avenue at East 12th Street, the OPD said. The OPD officer was taken to the hospital and was listed as being in stable condition.
The suspect tried to run away but was eventually taken into custody by a housing officer. The suspect was transported to a local hospital and was in stable condition. Two other people, who KRON4 reported were in the suspect’s vehicle at the time of the crash, died at the scene, the OPD said.
A photo of the crash published by KRON4 shows a gray SUV flipped on its side with severe damage. And a video of the crash posted on X by KTVU-TV reporter Henry Lee shows the OPD car with a smashed front bumper.
Police haven’t determined if drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash, the OPD said. The crash is still an active investigation, and anyone with information is urged to call the department at 510-777-8570.
