Asking a sabertoothed cat to change his ways? That is, if we could somehow zap back to the Ice Age and communicate with the famously tooth felines?

Well, we would never ever. Nor would we ask a dire wolf to do anything differently with his days, and ancient mammoths are just marvelous in our books.

But sometimes change of a more contemporary sort can arrive at an area associated with animals of another era, specifically a location that is famously fossil-laden.

That’s coming up on the Miracle Mile when La Brea Tar Pits Museum shutters for two years for a full-scale round of rethinks, reimaginings, and refurbishments.

You can still visit the bubbling bastion of prehistoric plentitude through July 7, and excavation sites in Hancock Park near the museum will remain open during the two-year renovation period.

But there’s something else special bubbling in the close distance: A free party before the closure, one that will bubble and pop with musical flows, cool activities, and enlightening museum wanderings.

It’s KCRW Summer Nights with La Brea Tar Pits, and it is setting up sound-strong shop at the Wilshire Boulevard natural attraction June 12.

Entry is complimentary, but first things first: You’ll need to RSVP, so make like a sabertoothed cat and let the organizers know meow… we mean now.

Food trucks will be nearby, delish, though don’t look for what a mastodon might have munched on back in the day: Tasty vittles created for humans will be the theme. The museum’s Tar Bar will also be open, too, if you’re over 21 and would like to purchase a cocktail

KCRW DJs Francesca Harding and Novena Carmel will be there with the terrific tunes, so plan to make like a tar pits bubble and shimmer, shine, and wiggle.

Look also for the Tarpits Mobile Museum and intriguing activities that complement the scientifically splendid vibe of the night.

There’s a ticketed disco-themed event called Last Dance at La Brea Tar Pits coming up June 27 if you’re keen to don ’70s styles and party some more, but for a free fling near the goopy lakes that neighbor the soon-to-temporarily-shutter museum, the June 12th party is the “mammoth” choice.
