Re “For new high school grads, advice on AI — and life” (June 7): A hearty thanks to the U-T for publishing a condensed version of Kevin Calkins’ 2026 commencement address to graduates at Cathedral Catholic High School. His counsel on dealing with emerging AI is far and away the most cogent, most practical and most compelling I have read. It goes beyond simple advice-giving and reaches to the heart of being human: “Do not let screens replace friendships. Do not let distraction replace prayer. Do not let artificial connection replace real community.”
He further addressed managing the uncertainty of our times: “So walk confidently into the unknown. Not because you have all the answers, but because you have learned how to live without them.”
This advice from a local Christian school administrator deserves a national audience, especially in this age of religious nationalism, disinformation, increasing polarization and the erosion of faith in democratic institutions.
