A Lufthansa flight from San Francisco to Munich was diverted to Boston on Thursday after what the airline described as an “unruly passenger” incident aboard the aircraft.
The airline said in a statement to the Chronicle that the passenger “posed a threat to the safe continuation of the flight.”
After the plane landed in Boston, the passenger was taken into custody by authorities, and his luggage was removed from the aircraft, Lufthansa said.
“The safety of all passengers and crew on board is always Lufthansa’s top priority,” the airline said in a statement.
The flight was carrying 508 passengers aboard an Airbus A380, Lufthansa said. After refueling in Boston, the plane continued to Munich.
Flight-tracking data showed the aircraft left San Francisco International Airport late Wednesday night and arrived in Boston on Thursday morning before resuming its trip to Germany. The aircraft was expected to arrive in Munich at 11:15 p.m. local time.
Authorities had not released the passenger’s name as of Thursday afternoon. Massachusetts State Police said the incident remained under investigation and said it was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured.
The diversion disrupted an international flight that normally takes about 11 hours from San Francisco to Munich.
