The Susan G. Komen Foundation brought the battle against breast cancer to Downtown, holding a MORE THAN PINK Walk on Sunday, Oct. 26 at the Los Angeles State Historic Park.
The walks are organized around the world to draw attention to the struggles that those battling breast cancer face. It builds a community amongst survivors and those still struggling with the disease. Throughout the walk, participants got breathtaking views of Downtown’s skyline — all while contributing to a meaningful cause. The walk raised over $730,000 as of publication.
While trying to cure the disease, the Susan G. Komen Foundation also offers direct support services to those facing it today, providing grants to eligible individuals that help cover daily living expenses. Learn more at komen.org.
“In our area here, approximately over 32,000 women will be diagnosed,” Susan G. Komen Los Angeles Executive Director Yolanda Van Dyke told the LA Downtown News earlier this month. “A lot of people aren’t aware of the fact that breast cancer is the most expensive cancer to treat, and so for a lot of women — men also are impacted by breast cancer, but at a much lower rate — even if they have insurance, they have to decide about getting treatment, or keeping the lights on or putting food on the table.”
Photographer Chris Mortenson joined the MORE THAN PINK Walk and caught it on camera.
