BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Drivers and pedestrians who use Mount Vernon Avenue in Bakersfield should plan for lane and sidewalk closures as Kern County Public Works begins a series of road and bridge projects expected to continue at least until February 2027.
Kern County Public Works is performing road improvements on Mount Vernon Avenue between Brundage Lane and Virginia Avenue. The work includes removing the existing center median and portions of the concrete sidewalks on both sides of the road.
Lane closures will be in effect from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during construction. Traffic will be maintained with one lane open in each direction for both northbound and southbound drivers. Construction is anticipated to be completed in February 2027.
Separately, Kern County Public Works’ Road Maintenance team will perform bridge railing repairs on the Mount Vernon Avenue Bridge on Monday, June 15, and Tuesday, June 16, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Work will take place on the east (northbound) side of the bridge.
To ensure the safety of workers, pedestrians, and motorists, the No. 2 northbound lane and the adjacent sidewalk will be closed during repair hours. No pedestrian detour will be available during the closure.
