A man has been federally indicted after authorities say he attempted to carry an explosive device and other weapons through a TSA checkpoint at a Sacramento airport.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A Sacramento man has been indicted on federal charges after authorities say he attempted to bring an explosive device and multiple weapons onto a flight at Sacramento International Airport, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

A federal grand jury returned a three-count indictment charging Kimani Osayande Jones with attempting to place a destructive device on an aircraft, unlawfully possessing explosive material in an airport and attempting to carry a dangerous weapon or explosive onto an aircraft.

According to court documents, the incident occurred May 30, 2026, when Jones attempted to pass through a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint to board an American Airlines flight. Authorities said he wore a scarf covering his face and latex gloves and carried a carry-on bag containing an explosive device, a torch lighter, knives, scissors, an aerosol can and zip ties.

Officials said Jones also had five cellphones, one of which displayed a 15-minute timer.

The explosive device was removed by Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office bomb technicians and an FBI bomb technician. The U.S. Attorney’s Office says testing later determined both the powder and fuse were viable and energetic, adding it had the potential to cause injury. They say if the device had detonated near a window on an aircraft above 10,000 feet, it could have caused a loss of cabin pressure.

Jones could face up to 30 years in prison and large fines if convicted.
